Post Ranch Inn: A Night in Big Sur

We spent one night at Post Ranch Inn in a Lower Mountain Room, and I still think about waking up to the mountains just beyond our windows. We’d left the curtains open overnight, and the view that morning was one of my favorite memories from the stay.

The room was exceptional. We loved the wood-burning fireplace, complete with extra logs to add whenever we wanted, and the attention given to everything inside. All of the in-room amenities were included, down to a charcuterie setup with a cutting board, knife, cheeses, and meats to slice ourselves. We put together a spread and enjoyed it on our balcony with a glass of wine, looking out over the mountains. The chocolate chip cookies were so good we even called to have them replenished. If we ever return, we’d request the same room without hesitation.

The rest of the property was where things fell a little short. We weren’t particularly impressed by the pool areas or the gym, especially given the caliber of the hotel. We also had lunch and breakfast at Sierra Mar, and while the setting was beautiful, neither meal was particularly memorable. At this price point, I expected the food to be a bigger part of the experience.

The service was attentive and professional, but it felt a little more formal than what I personally gravitate toward. I tend to love smaller hotels where the hospitality feels warm and familiar, and while everything at Post Ranch Inn was polished, I missed that personal connection. I also found that quite a few experiences and amenities came at an additional cost, which was disappointing given the overall price of the stay.

One of our favorite moments actually came from a conversation with the staff member who drove us to our room. He let us in on his favorite spot to watch the sunset, and we made a point to find it later that evening. He was right. It was one of the most beautiful moments of our time there.

I’m glad we experienced Post Ranch Inn, and I can understand why it’s such a sought-after place to stay. The room was genuinely special, and I wouldn’t rule out going back for that alone. But for a hotel at this level, I had hoped the experience beyond our room would be just as memorable.
